Most people agree a sparkling, white smile is very appealing. Unfortunately, our teeth rarely stay as white as we wish. Over time, your beautiful, bright smile can fade. Smoking, drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine as well as consuming various foods can contribute to your teeth becoming stained, dull or discoloured. Fortunately, we can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.
Professional teeth whitening (bleaching) is a safe, effective way to brighten your smile. It's also perhaps the most economical cosmetic dental procedure.
Professional whitening makes use of high concentration bleaching gels that are not available over the counter. In addition, professionally supervised whitening will work faster and protect sensitive gums and tooth-root surfaces better than over-the-counter whitening products. Also, professional whitening packages do not contain any abrasive substances often found in commercially available "whitening toothpastes" that can wear away your tooth's enamel.
It is important to note that not all discoloured teeth can be corrected with teeth whitening. Intrinsic discolouration, caused by traumatic injuries, medications or fluorosis, begins inside the tooth. These conditions will not improve with teeth bleaching, but can be corrected with porcelain veneers or crowns. It is important to see your dentist before you begin any whitening process to discuss which teeth whitening methods work best for you.
Your Professional Take-Home Whitening Process
Your teeth whitening process will require 2 visits.
At your first visit, we will take an impression of your teeth to make two thin, flexible bleaching trays – one for your upper teeth and one for the lower. In some cases, we can give you your custom bleaching trays later in the same day.
At your second visit, you will try in the custom bleaching trays, and we’ll show you how to use your professional bleaching package.
Welcome to your whiter smile!
Caring for Your Whitened Smile
Your whitening results can last from 6 months to over 2 years, depending on your oral habits. It is important to brush and floss conscientiously everyday, and continue to see your dentist for your regular professional cleanings every 3 - 6 months. Avoid foods and beverages that stain, including red wine, tea and coffee. If you smoke, use your newly whitened teeth as an impetus to quit. Add in a minor whitening touch-up every so often, and your smile can remain bright and beautiful for years!
